Margot Robbie Took Her Mum With Her To The Oscars

Margot Robbie’s star has risen so high that she could choose pretty much anyone to be her date to the Oscars – if not her husband Tom Ackerley, that is. But at last night’s 90th Academy Awards she decided to take the best date of all: her mum.

Robbie was spotted out and about with her mum, Sarie Kessler, as she enjoyed her first Oscar nomination for Best Actress for her role as Tonya Harding in I, Tonya.

Margot – who also presented the award for Best Adapted Screenplay with Chadwick Boseman, which went to Call Me By Your Name – obviously wanted her mum to enjoy some of her success.

As it was Margot’s first nomination, you can understand why Margot would choose this particular date – ABC suggested that it was no coincidence that she wanted to be near the most comforting person of all.

“I’m a little nervous but very excited for Margot,” Sarie told ABC.

I, Tonya saw Margot exploring the life of condemned American figure skater Harding. As she was also involved in producing the film, the spotlight was on her to shine – but with her mum by her side she didn’t seem nervous at all.

“It’s incredible,” Margot said. “When you’re producing [a film] as well, if it had gone badly it really would have been my fault, so now that it’s gone well it’s really exciting.”

While Margot didn’t end up winning Best Actress – which ultimately went to Frances McDormand for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri – no doubt the pair enjoyed their night on the red carpet.

Robbie wasn’t the only person to take their mum with them to the big bash last night. Timothée Chalamet, who also got his first nomination for Best Actor in Call Me By Your Name, also took his mum Nicole Flender along. Guess the Oscars are a scary place if you’re up for your first one.

This isn’t the first-time huge film stars have asked their parents to join them for the awards show – the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Bradley Cooper and Brad Pitt have all gone down the red carpet with their proud parents in tow.

The Oscars isn’t a bad place to take your mum, if you can. Most of us have to settle for Spoons.
